I reprint the Chart here with the caveat that Schrade Tang marks were pretty constant from until the early ‘s when they started to come in various designs and wordings over the next 34 years that made them hard to period date. Another caveat is that Schrade knives made after have tang mark wordings that recently look closer and closer to the old Schrade’s tang markings and a collector should be looking at the font and etch on the knife versus tang mark wording as well as the total knife makeup itself as one’s best guide.

Many old experts have always told me do not read the Tang Mark but read the knife. Unfortunately this Chart is as big as I can post the picture in eBay’s guides despite enlarging it to try to increase its size and eBay supplying no tool to increase its size. A better view of the chart can be found at the original discussion site: Colonial Knife also denies making Edgemaster.

Feb 27,  · Good old made in USA ones. I like my BuckLite the best. There are a lot of companies that make good knives. Case comes to mind. Carried a Case for many years until George gave me them Bucks. How I tell a good knife is how easy or hard it is to get it sharpened. Hard to tell on a new knife because they come sharp.

No more sharp ridges on it, and it looked like it had been carried in a pocket for years, and yet it was brand new.

I would say the Buck has a better rep, mainly due to the advertising and popularity in movies and such. In fact, if you look up Buck knife on the bay, not only Buck knives come up, but many other knives as well, because so many folks call any larger knife That being said, I used to collect Schrade knives and still have a few. It sort of looks like wood, but I assume it’s some kind of bone – just pale. Any idea when they started inscribing the model numbers? I know it’s or after, so I’m trying to get an upper cap. The Old Timer is made from traditional cutlery steel and stainless steel, and the handles are crafted from Delrin or Staglon, both very durable materials. The Old Timer is almost unbreakable and shockproof, and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Schrade Old Timer: Sharpfinger by Dan Jackson 18 Comments The Schrade OT, more commonly referred to as the Schrade Sharpfinger is one of Schrade’s most iconic designs.

Both the pattern and materials are so similar to that of the SCHF35, much of this review might seem a bit redundant, but necessary. Once the SCHF34 has been inserted fully, it is held firmly in place without any risk of it falling out. Additionally, the removable belt loop can easily be flipped to the other side for left-handed use, utilizing two of the four grommet holes.

Two black G handle slabs are securely fastened through the tang with two steel bolts. Each slab is deeply scaled to provide a firm, comfortable grip even in the wettest of conditions. The slabs are slightly smaller than the tang so it can be used as a pummel when necessary. The SCHF34 features a 3. This full-tang design provides all of the strength, rigidity and durability that you would expect from any good survival knife.

Stainless steel is a popular class of material for knife blades because it has properties that are commonly resistant to rust and corrosion, while remaining easy to maintain. This makes it an excellent choice for a survival blade. While this alloy is typically easier to sharpen than other stainless alloys like C, it generally does not hold an edge quite as well.

Although the 8Cr13MoV high carbon stainless steel and full-tang design are certainly tough enough to withstand a moderate amount of punishment, it is only rust resistant, and not completely rust proof. Even with the protective stone-washed finish, it is still susceptible to rust without proper care and maintenance.

If the blade becomes wet, simply dry it thoroughly and lightly coat it with a protective oil before any long-term storage.
