Associate Director, Africa Division jehannehenry Share Print Fifteen years ago this month, the world decided to take seriously the rights of women caught up in conflict, and passed Resolution at the UN Security Council. This and other UN resolutions adopted over the years recognize women as central to efforts to maintain peace and security — and tomorrow council members will once again affirm this tenet. Take Sudan, for instance. Government forces, rebels, and other armed men have raped and assaulted women and girls without fear of any consequence across several conflict zones in the region. Sudanese government attacks have maimed and killed women and children, burning them alive and severing their limbs, and destroyed schools and clinics in the Nuba Mountains. The council should also authorize a much-needed impartial investigation into abuses against civilians in Darfur, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile. These investigation teams should include experts on sexual violence. Its repressive and discriminatory laws undermine women and girls across the country and diminish their ability to participate meaningfully in public life.

The recommendation follows the pending deportation of Sudanese-born former child refugee Isaac Gatkuoth, now 20, who was imprisoned for an armed, ice-fuelled carjacking committed in November Gatkuoth was last year jailed for 14 months in a youth detention centre for pointing a sawn-off shotgun at a driver in Frankston, south-east of Melbourne, as the youth rode in a stolen BMW with four others when it rammed another car.
The youth, who came to Australia as a nine-year-old refugee, was given a deportation order for being linked to the Apex gang, along with three New Zealanders. Labor members of the parliamentary committee released a dissenting report, accusing Mr Wood of ‘hijacking’ the report for political purposes. Serious assaults committed by Sudanese youth rose by 55 per cent between and including this alleged assault on a Melbourne bus in April ‘Despite minimal or no evidence the report focuses on young humanitarian entrants from Sudanese backgrounds who engage in criminal activity,’ they said.
The Labor MPs, including Melbourne-based Maria Vamvakinou, also disagreed with Mr Wood on the idea of amending the Migration Act of so visas would be automatically cancelled for youths, aged 16 to 18, convicted of serious violent crime.

The ways of responding to the antibiotic resistance challenges such as the development of novel strategies in the search for new antimicrobials, designing more effective preventive measures and, importantly, better understanding the ecology of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance are discussed.

Nearly two decades after first arriving, they have settled on the Darling Downs, becoming entwined in the social fabric of Toowoomba’s community. While in Melbourne an intense social and political debate has erupted over the emergence of young African “gangs”, Toowoomba, home to an estimated South Sudanese among 10, refugees from Africa and the Middle East, has remained peaceful.
In the softly-spoken words of Wac Duot, leader of the South Sudanese community in Toowoomba, the population’s successful integration into Toowoomba life over many years can be attributed to a number of factors. The warm welcome they received from the community upon their arrival, the aid of government settlement services, the help of community organisations – both secular and religious, and the excellent work done by schools to educate the next generation are but a few of the factors Mr Duot identified as having smoothed the way for their integration.
But above all, Mr Duot said it was the cooperation between authorities and elders that had paved the way for Toowoomba’s success. Kevin Farmer “You find these young people, they might be in limbo between the Australian and South Sudanese cultures,” he said. The authorities concerned, they call the elders of the community and they come and sit down and discuss the issue and solve it, that’s what makes it successful.
He put his hand up for the role, firstly to help direct his people into the future and secondly, “to build a village of communication between the Australian and South Sudanese community”. Lastly, he hopes to establish more opportunities for young South Sudanese, particularly in areas of sport and education. The youngsters, he said, were bright and adaptable, and their proficiency in English often quickly outstripped that of their Dinka and Arabic-speaking parents.

It will not help the victims of racism. It will only isolate and target the Jewish state.

A widow is NOT a single mother. Her husband died, defending the sovereignty of our beloved South Sudan God bless the beautiful Republic of South Sudan. Children of single mothers do poorly on every imaginable scale. Ben Carson , lol, and experience way more behavioral problems than children who grow up with married parents. Depression, suicide, drug abuse, jail and psychiatric medications are all more common in populations of children raised by single mothers.
Be sensible, for the love of Nhialic God Second, single mothers are clearly really, really shitty at making life decisions. Having a child out of wedlock is pretty much the number one thing you can do to fuck up your life. You can pick up an alcoholic addiction, drop out of high school, rob a bank if you want to , or decide to write the great South Sudan Conflict history novel, to finance yourself on your credit cards.
All of those things can be fixed. Third, single mothers profoundly misunderstand men. This shit is real. A woman who cares so little about her children, her own prospects, and her future husband is NOT going to make a great wife.

The man’s ultimate fate is likely to be determined when his case goes back before the tribunal again. That man’s reprieve means the federal government must lodge another notice to cancel his visa if he is to be deported once he has served his time in jail. Meanwhile, an analysis of the sentences imposed on some of the young Sudanese and South Sudanese men in Victorian courts last year showed almost all were repeat offenders. Their sentences ranged from four years in prison to community corrections orders.
One of the men who did not have a criminal past when sentenced had his sentence deferred for a year to see if he could continue his good behaviour. In several cases, County Court judges told offenders they could not overlook criminal histories and had to impose jail terms, even when acknowledging the trauma most had experienced as children, having fled civil war, endured poverty and witnessed violence in refugee camps.
Problems with alcohol and drugs were also common among the 12 men. Those orders have not been successful,” Judge Grant said.
