Fred Taylor July 26, Furniture making in America in the 19th century ranged from the small shop, like that of Duncan Phyfe in downtown New York at the turn of the century, to the huge factories of Grand Rapids and Buffalo at the turn of the next century. Phyfe was one of the rare early century cabinetmakers who actually used paper labels and tags to identify some of his work. In fact, some items can be dated by the address on the label, since his shops constantly expanded and the streets were renamed. This numbered label from the Mahogany Association was the assurance that all exposed wood was genuine mahogany. Photo courtesy Fred Taylor Beginning around mid-century, the advent of the factory system meant most furniture was made in a commercial facility under the auspices of a company name, and very few individual craftsmen labeled their product. Even the companies of the time were a little lax in marking the work. By the end of the century, makers like Gustav Stickley and major manufacturers in Grand Rapids, Cincinnati and Chicago had developed elaborate logos and trademarks, and few quality items escaped some sort of identification. This has been a boon to modern collectors, giving them the start of a trail of clues to establish age and origin of older furniture. But like so many things of the 20th century, what started as a simple method of marking furniture quickly became confusing by the second decade.

Lastly, Union tags are a giveaway for vintage clothing and typically dates the item from between and sometime in the s depending on the tag design. A union label will be from either the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) or from one of the other six union or union .
As this adage implies, word choice when describing an item can sometimes be subjective, and the item’s value is often relative to the worth placed on it by an individual. With the value of an item being so variable, then, it is important to come to some common understanding of the standard meaning attached to basic labels. Whether hunting at the antique shop for enjoyment, or surfing listings for just the right item, understanding what is meant by terms such as “antique” or “vintage” will improve the buying and selling process.
These terms join a host of others e. But just being old does not make an item an “antique” or “vintage. Defining Terms While both terms, “antique” and “vintage,” do muster connotations of “old,” understanding the specific meanings that people knowledgeable about the trade attach to these words will go a long way toward clearer communication.

Central Asia’s Lost Civilization The unveiling of a 4, year-old civilization calls into question conventional ideas about ancient culture, trade, and religion. This barren place, a site called Gonur, was once the heart of a vast archipelago of settlements that stretched across 1, square miles of Central Asian plains. Although unknown to most Western scholars, this ancient civilization dates back 4, years—to the time when the first great societies along the Nile, Tigris-Euphrates, Indus, and Yellow rivers were flourishing.
Thousands of people lived in towns like Gonur with carefully designed streets, drains, temples, and homes. To water their orchards and fields, they dug lengthy canals to channel glacier-fed rivers that were impervious to drought. They traded with distant cities for ivory, gold, and silver, creating what may have been the first commercial link between the East and the West. They buried their dead in elaborate graves filled with fine jewelry, wheeled carts, and animal sacrifices.
Then, within a few centuries, they vanished. News of this lost civilization began leaking out in the s, when archaeologists came to dig in the southern reaches of the Soviet Union and in Afghanistan. Their findings, which were published only in obscure Russian-language journals, described a culture with the tongue-twisting name Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex.
